Al-Doped Tungsten Wire

Al-doped tungsten wire, also known as AKS doped tungsten wire (Al-K-Si doped tungsten wire) or non-sag tungsten wire, is a high-performance tungsten wire produced via powder metallurgy. It introduces trace amounts of aluminum (Al), potassium (K), and silicon (Si) compounds into Blue Tungsten Oxide (BTO), followed by hydrogen reduction, acid washing, compaction, sintering, rotary swaging, and multi-pass wire drawing processes. As a typical high-temperature functional tungsten wire, CTIA AKS doped tungsten wire is widely used in applications requiring excellent creep resistance and shape stability, such as electric light sources and vacuum electronic devices.
1. Properties of Al-Doped Tungsten Wire
The core performance advantage of Al-doped tungsten wire comes from its unique potassium bubble pinning mechanism. Through the Al-K-Si-O composite system, an axial potassium bubble structure containing approximately 30 to 100 ppm potassium is formed, which effectively pins grain boundaries, suppresses lateral grain growth, and promotes an interlocked elongated grain structure. This raises the recrystallization temperature to above 1800°C, and in some cases up to around 2100°C. The resulting structure provides excellent creep resistance and sag resistance, allowing the wire to maintain dimensional stability at 2300 to 2800°C, while also offering low vapor pressure, good room-temperature ductility, relatively high tensile strength, and strong dimensional stability.
2. Specifications of Al-Doped Tungsten Wire
The aluminum content typically ranges from 20 to 100 ppm, potassium from 30 to 100 ppm, and silicon from several tens to over one hundred ppm, with total impurity content controlled at ≤0.05%. Tungsten wire is available from ultra-fine micrometer-scale sizes to about 1.5 mm in diameter. In lighting applications, it is commonly used in the 10–50 micrometer range, while photovoltaic tungsten wire substrates are generally in the 15–35 micrometer range. Dimensional precision is strictly controlled, with tight diameter tolerances and sub-micrometer ovality for ultra-fine wires. Common grades include WAl1 for high color temperature and vibration-resistant filaments, WAl2 for standard incandescent and halogen applications, as well as W91 and WR15 series. Surface finishes are classified as black tungsten wire and cleaned tungsten wire.
3. Applications of Al-Doped Tungsten Wire
Al-doped tungsten wire is mainly used in applications requiring high-temperature sag resistance and shape stability, typically in continuous high-temperature and mechanically loaded environments involving structural and heating elements. Based on operating temperature, load conditions, and structural design, CTIA provides matched specifications and processing states.
3.1 Electric light sources
Used in incandescent, halogen, tungsten-halogen, and automotive headlamp filaments, maintaining stable geometry at high temperatures, reducing sagging risk, and improving luminous efficiency and service life.
3.2 Vacuum electronic devices
Used in X-ray tubes, magnetrons, and klystrons as heating cathodes and filaments, and also as ion source emitters, enabling stable performance in high-temperature and vacuum environments.
3.3 Other high-temperature and precision applications
Used in high-temperature furnace heating elements, high-temperature springs, thermocouple protection structures, and medical guidewires, providing reliable performance under extreme thermal conditions, while also serving as a base material for photovoltaic diamond wire cutting and supporting aerospace and nuclear energy-related applications.
CTIA stabilizes the formation of bubble-chain structures through coordinated control of doping systems, sintering regimes, and deformation processes, enabling a fibrous grain morphology under high-temperature conditions, which balances creep resistance and dimensional stability. Doped tungsten wire selection depends on service temperature, load conditions, and expected service life requirements.
